Judge and local deity

Judge Cui, commonly named Cui Jue or Cui Ziyu, keeps records of life and death in popular underworld narratives. The cult of Lord Cui developed around traditions of upright local officials; its historical prototypes and accumulated biographies are not entirely straightforward. His familiar robes, official cap, tablet, brush, and register translate human administration into the other world.

The register in fiction

Journey to the West tells how Cui changes Emperor Taizong's recorded lifespan and helps him return to life. Related material survives in the Dunhuang narrative of Taizong's descent to the underworld. These are literary miracles, not evidence of a historical official altering lives. The tidy modern scheme placing Cui, Wei Zheng, Zhong Kui, and Judge Lu in four separate departments combines figures from different traditions. It should not be mistaken for a single ancient religious canon.
