City of Fengdu
A capital of shadows, between myth and landscape.
A capital in the other world
Fengdu is imagined as a center of government for the dead, with gates, streets, palaces, judges, and attendants. Daoist sources such as the Zhengao and Zhenling Weiye Tu connect the ghostly realm with northern Luofeng Mountain. Popular literature later placed many familiar underworld institutions within a city bearing Fengdu's name.
The earthly Ghost City
Fengdu in present-day Chongqing is a real religious and cultural landscape. Traditions of the immortals Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping, local temples, and the association of their surnames with a king of shadows helped join it to the mythic realm. This connection developed historically; the Daoist northern mountain and Chongqing site were not originally the same geographical place. Temple construction and later scenic displays made an imagined route tangible. Their arrangement is a local interpretation, rather than the definitive map of Chinese religion.
