Scissors Hell

剪刀地狱

An old pair of scissors opens the knots between story and society.

Scene 02 · Relationships and historical customPopular Chinese eighteen-hell list

An ordinary tool transformed

Scissors Hell is second in the selected popular list. Scissors and tangled threads suggest relationships being cut apart. The illustration keeps the old courtroom atmosphere and its objects without depicting injury. Adjacency in a directory does not mean every soul must pass through this scene.

Family morality in its historical setting

Some accounts condemn deception or malicious interference in families. Others also condemn arranging a widow's remarriage. Such claims reflect particular ideals of chastity and lineage authority. This atlas records that historical outlook; it does not classify remarriage, divorce or personal choice as offences.

Limits of the name

The familiar popular name cannot be projected back as the second hell of the Shiba Nili Jing. Nor does a similar implement prove an identical place within every edition of Yuli Baochao.

Reading beyond the instrument

Compare Iron Tree Hell to see another treatment of kinship, then Kshitigarbha to encounter compassion toward suffering. These links place the scene within changing social and religious imagination rather than a universal code.
