Steamer Hell

蒸笼地狱

Steam circles an old basket; rumours also need examination.

Scene 05 · Rumour and discernmentPopular Chinese eighteen-hell list

The kitchen becomes an underworld scene

Fifth in this atlas's list, Steamer Hell enlarges a familiar cooking implement into a moral image. Baskets, a stove and heavy vapour make it recognizable. The illustration concentrates on their structure and a distant attendant, without showing punishment.

Why speech appears again

Popular accounts connect this scene with malicious gossip or false accusations, overlapping with Tongue-Pulling Hell. Some versions connect the two as successive punishments; others treat the steamer independently. Such repetition shows a list assembled from multiple narrative traditions, not eighteen perfectly separate legal departments.

Historical language needs care

Some materials use gendered insults for people who spread rumours. Describing the actual harm is more informative than repeating that stereotype. Conversation, expressing distress and deliberate defamation should not be collapsed into one category.

Heat is not an exact identification

Related hot scenes occur in scripture and morality pictures, but the popular name and fifth position are not universal. Compare Cauldron Hell to see another ordinary cooking vessel transformed into a moral metaphor.
