The sixth court

King Biancheng occupies the sixth court after Yanluo. The popular Yuli Baochao arrangement connects him with the Great Screaming Hell, subsidiary hells, and the City of Untimely Death. That city holds souls whose deaths disrupted an imagined lifespan or left unresolved grievances. Confinement there does not mean the same thing in every story.

Versions and compassionate readings

These accounts belong to historical religious and literary responses to sudden death. They should not be used to blame people who died or their families. Ritual traditions sometimes imagine release through opening the city and assisting the souls within it. The king's name, court duties, and relations to other deities vary by text and locality. His position here follows a common popular sequence so that visitors can compare the courts while recognizing that the Ten Kings do not form a single unchanging canon.
