Granny Meng
One bowl of soup, and a farewell to the past.
The soup before rebirth
Granny Meng, or Meng Po, offers a soup that makes departing souls forget their former lives. Today's familiar image places a kindly elderly woman beside Naihe Bridge. Her task connects memory, attachment, and the passage into another life, rather than the punishment of wrongdoing.
A figure formed over time
The name Meng Po did not always describe an underworld deity: Song poetry used it for the wind. Late Ming and early Qing fiction gradually linked her with bewildering food or drink, and the morality book Yuli Baochao developed her role at a Terrace of Forgetting. Its account of her Han-dynasty birth is a religious narrative, not a verified historical biography. Her placement beside the bridge, stories identifying her with Meng Jiangnü, and modern romantic backstories belong to different layers of folklore. They should not all be attributed to ancient scripture.
