Terrace of Homeward Gaze
One last look toward the home left behind.
A place to look back
From this high terrace, the dead look toward their former home and family. It expresses parting and homesickness, but some morality-book versions turn the view into punishment: wrongdoers witness the consequences of their conduct among the living. The emotional scene is as important as any physical description.
No single place on the map
Texts and temples position the terrace differently. Yuli Baochao associates it with Yanluo's fifth court, while Pu Songling's Geng Shiba presents it near the entrance to the other world. Related imagery appears in drama, poetry, and local mourning customs. Human-world places for gazing homeward supplied another layer to the name. Modern maps that place the terrace at a fixed point in one continuous route are useful storytelling devices, but they should not erase these differences or be attributed to every religious tradition.
