At the directory's end, distinguish saw imagery from Avici.

Scene 18 · Last positions and different traditionsPopular Chinese eighteen-hell list

Last in this particular list

Saw Hell closes the popular eighteen-name sequence used here. A large saw, wooden frame and enclosed gate identify its scene. The last position often intensifies a story's sense of grave consequences. The illustration shows implements only, without presenting fear as the purpose of reading.

A concluding warning

Popular materials attach fraud, unfair dealings or harm to vulnerable people, with no consistent list. Gathering many wrongs into a final scene serves a narrative purpose; it does not create a precise law for determining actual people's fate.

Eighteenth does not always mean Avici

Avici, or the uninterrupted hell, belongs to Buddhist classifications. The Shiba Nili Jing uses another name for its eighteenth hell. Some ten-court stories associate Avici with King Pingdeng. Shared severity does not make all these names identical to Saw Hell.
