Houtu
The earth that holds mountains, rivers, and all life.
Earth, office, and deity
Houtu is an ancient name associated with the earth, its divine authority, and offices governing it. The Zuo Tradition relates Houtu to Goulong, while ritual texts pair sovereign earth with august heaven. Later imperial worship and Daoist systems gave the deity further titles and functions. The familiar maternal goddess image is one stage in this long development, not an unchanged prehistoric portrait.
A connection with the world below
Wang Yi's commentary on Summoning the Soul in the Songs of Chu describes the underground Youdu as Houtu's domain. This is an important connection between earth and the dead. It does not make Houtu a judge in the later ten-court system. Burial and tomb-visiting customs preserve worship of the local earth beside the grave. Accounts of her gender, rank, and place among Daoist sovereign deities differ across periods and traditions.
