Emperor Dongyue

东岳大帝

From Mount Tai, a watch over life and death.

Lord of Mount Tai · Eastern PeakDaoism and folk religion

The mountain and the dead

Emperor Dongyue is the deity of Mount Tai, the Eastern Peak. Chinese traditions connecting the mountain with the gathering of souls preceded the mature ten-court system. The Book of the Later Han, supernatural tales, and Daoist collections such as Yunji Qiqian preserve aspects of this history. The deity came to oversee lifespan, the records of the dead, and moral recompense.

Many offices, many arrangements

Dongyue temples visualize the other world through departments and officials. Their numbers and duties vary: accounts mention seventy-two, seventy-five, or seventy-six offices. These differences matter more than a single tidy diagram. The Rapid Recompense Department is particularly prominent in folk belief. Dongyue's relationship to Fengdu and Yanluo changes by setting. He must also be distinguished from King Taishan of the seventh court: a shared mountain name does not erase their different religious histories.
