Animal Realm
Lives in forests and waters also deserve attention and care.
More than domestic animals
The animal realm, also called the destiny of animals, includes the varied beasts, birds, fish, and insects found in Buddhist texts and narratives. It should not be reduced to livestock. Its Chinese traditional name, chusheng, can be an insult in ordinary modern speech. The atlas retains the term to explain a religious classification, never as a label for judging actual people.
Vulnerability and interdependence
Stories often describe predation, forced labor, hunger, and fear to show suffering when a life has little freedom. But birth stories, protection-of-life tales, and accounts of animals repaying kindness also give animals gratitude, loyalty, and generosity. Animal narratives cannot all be summarized as stupidity or punishment. Nor does a belief about karmic suffering provide a justification for inflicting harm.
Rebirth and care for life
Within rebirth thought, the boundary between humans and animals is not permanent. Different living beings may be connected across a long succession of lives. This supplies one background for Buddhist discussions of compassion, non-killing, and protecting life. Its cultural force is an expansion of concern. It is not a formula for predicting someone's next animal body from their preferences or misfortunes. Animal results in our games likewise do not represent a canonical calculation.
Reading the woodland scene
The illustration brings a Chinese landscape, woodland paths, birds, and mammals into one shared setting. Animals appear as living neighbors rather than instruments of punishment. Their rounded forms invite attention to difference and mutual dependence without claiming to exhaust scriptural classifications. Read beside the Human Realm, this entry asks how we treat nearby lives, rather than how to place beings in a hierarchy of worth.
