Human Realm
In ordinary human lives, sorrow and joy leave room for choice.
Human life within the six realms
The human realm is the condition of human existence in Buddhist accounts of rebirth. It means more than a particular city, dynasty, or country. Cosmological descriptions of Mount Sumeru and four great continents place human life within a larger imagined world. Jambudvipa, familiar in Chinese as Nanzhanbuzhou, is an important name in that system; a religious cosmological diagram should not simply be read as a modern geographical map.
Opportunities between joy and sorrow
The teaching that a human birth is difficult to obtain encourages people to value their opportunities to learn, reflect, and practice. Human stories include reunion and separation, illness and care, work and rest. Speech and action can also change relationships. This emphasis does not give humans permission to dismiss other lives. It instead asks what compassion, restraint, and wisdom can mean in the circumstances already before us.
Rebirth in Chinese stories
Popular underworld narratives make another life visible through King Zhuanlun assigning a birth and Granny Meng offering forgetfulness. These scenes connect rebirth with memory, family affection, and parting. They belong to Chinese literary and religious developments; not every Buddhist tradition requires a departing person to drink a bowl of soup. The bridge-side farewell can therefore be read on more than one cultural level.
Images and limits
Our picture uses a market, homes, fields, and people helping one another to evoke everyday life. Occupation, wealth, health, and bodily differences are not grounds for declaring someone's past-life guilt or present spiritual rank. The atlas explains traditions; the games invent fictional rebirth identities. This realm is an entrance through daily experience, rather than a ranking of human destinies.
