More than a frightening ghost

Yakshas are a varied class of beings with roots in Indian religion. Buddhist traditions include both threatening yakshas and protectors of the teaching. Some are associated with Vaishravana; the Twelve Yaksha Generals in the Medicine Buddha tradition promise to protect devotees. Their fierce faces do not by themselves indicate evil.

Chinese transformations

In Chinese literature the name can describe powerful ghostly attendants, guards in a dragon king's service, or inhabitants of an unfamiliar land. Journey to the West and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio offer different literary settings. Buddhist art may depict muscular, armored guardians rather than the same creature in every scene. A yaksha is therefore a category, not one named underworld official with a universal job description. Games and popular summaries that assign all yakshas to soul-catching duties simplify a much broader religious and artistic history.
